Alcohol can be useful in many ways. From chrome polishers and window cleaners to cold remedies and pain relief balms here are 10 Unconventional Uses for Alcohol.
Booze may not be one of the top ten ‘Healthiest Drinks’ but alcohol in all of its common forms actually has some unexpected benefits that aren’t only restricted to health. By mixing liquor with different ingredients or even by using it neat, you can get a lot of damage control done in emergencies. Here’s a list of the top ten uses of Alcohol-
1. Liven up the dull hair:
Pour one cup of beer into a saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Let it reduce till there’s 1/4 cup left. This removes the alcohol, which can dry your hair. Let the beer cool before mixing it with a cup of your shampoo. Pour it into an empty shampoo bottle, then wash and rinse as usual. It’ll give your hair more shine and lustre.
2. Air Freshener:
Fill a spray bottle with some gin and a few drops of essential oil of your choice for a homemade air freshener. The alcohol quickly evaporates, leaving behind the piny scent of juniper and whatever else you chose to add in.
By mixing Rubbing Alcohol/Vodka, White Vinegar, Cornstarch, and warm water, you can make yourself the most efficient window cleaner to use right away. With this easy remedy combined with a little bit of elbow grease, you can have your chrome and porcelain fixtures shining bright in no time.
4. Great Antiseptic:
If you’re out on a trip that includes alcohol, but not a first aid kit (Try avoiding these situations, though) and find yourself with cuts and scrapes, put that bottle of liquor with a clean cloth to disinfect the wounded area and wrap it up before you get proper medical help.
Forests: If you ever get rashes from Poison Ivy, you can minimise the effects by simply pouring vodka or rubbing alcohol on the red areas.
Beaches: If a jellyfish decides to ruin your day at the beach, and you aren’t comfortable with asking your friends for ‘help’ just pour some wine/beer on the sting area to reduce pain.
Domestic: If you’re suffering from a toothache just swish the vodka on the affected area to minimise the pain.
5. Preserve Flowers:
You no longer have to worry about flowers given by your loved ones dying out quickly like a bad metaphor. You can now preserve them for a longer time by mixing a few drops of vodka with a tablespoon of sugar and adding it to the water you’re keeping your flowers in. Be sure to change the mixture every day for a longer lasting effect.
6. Clean Jewellery:
Keep your shiny jewellery always glowing by soaking it in gin and then rubbing it clean. Be it your earrings, rings, or watch handles (Please don’t dip the whole watch in), you can get them shining in no time with a bit of gin.
7. Remove Jar/Bottle Labels:
If you ever want to reuse glass jars and wine bottles but are put off by the sticky labels, just soak them in vodka for a while and rejoice as the stubborn labels peel right off.
8. Remove Grease Stains:
Mix white wine with baking soda and let it sit on the greased spot to break up grease stains on your pavement or floor. You may have to repeat the process a few times.
9. Lavender Tincture:
Vodka, as a great pain relief agent, can be used to make a homemade Lavender Tincture that can ease minor aches and pains with the following steps-
1. Place a few lavender twigs into a fresh jar.
