Southern Italy – Limoncello
Citrusy, lemony goodness – that’s what defines limoncello. The Italians may look all fancy, but they sure do love the simplest of things!
Made by infusing 80 or 100 proof (containing 40% or 50% alcohol) vodka with lemon zest for about a month and sweetening with simple syrup, limoncello is easily the simplest and most convenient home-made liquor to exist! What’s even better, traditional South Italy households serve it chilled after meals as it is said to aid in digestion and give you a good night’s sleep. Italy, here we come!!
Japan – Sake
The land of the Rising Sun, Japan is known for its hardworking people and age-old traditions. And with hard work comes the need to unwind and relax every now and then. After just one sip of Sake, you’ll realise that the Japanese have found the perfect way to do that. Wine made from fermented polished rice, Sake is brewed like beer and is a significant part of Japanese customs and traditions. It can be served warm, chilled or at room temperature and is the Japanese way of laying back after a long day’s work!
Cuba – Mojito
You may have tasted a mojito or two in your life, but a mojito in Cuba is like no mojito ever. Super easy to whip up and hella comforting, a mojito is what you need after those crazy and stress-addled days. The evergreen combination of mint and lemon make the white rum even better than it is by itself! People have reported that the classic mojito tastes best when sipped through a long straw while seated under an umbrella on a Cuban beach.
Mexico – Tequila
One shot, two shots, tequila is going to get you hot! Would you believe it if you were told that Mexico has a town named “Tequila”, and that the main ingredient used in tequila production, i.e the blue agave plants, are grown in plentiful in the valley surrounding the town? I think not. Why not find out for yourself? Head to the small town of Tequila for a booze-y vacation and find out more about the shot that makes you the life of every party!
Canada – Ceasar
Canada is known for the politeness of its people, its maple syrup, its Prime Minister, its pop singers, but most definitely not for this Canadian classic, the Caesar. This cocktail is a party in your mouth, with vodka and hot sauce, combined with Worcestershire sauce and tomato juice. Served with lime wedges, it tastes quite similar to Bloody Mary but delivers a spicy kick that is absolutely unique, making this drink hugely popular across the country.
France – Absinthe
Not much is known about Absinthe, the elusive mystical green colour alcoholic drink that is said to be hallucinogenic and is called ‘the green fairy’. Flavoured with sweet fennel and anise and served with a sugar cube, absinthe has suffered through its fair share of bad fame, with several countries still enforcing their ban on it till the late 1990s. Traditionally a French preparation, Absinthe is a class apart, made for those who enjoy flavorful concoctions with a buzz!
Russia – Vodka
One simply cannot mention an ‘alcohol retreat’ without including Vodka, the Russian elixir. Traditionally, vodka is drunk straight up as a shot but if you may mix it up with delightful flavour combinations, we assure you that vodka will never ever let you down. Head over to one of the Vodka Belt countries (Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine) to enjoy it at its finest, served straight from the producers.
Pick some of these scenic spots and lose yourself in the goodness that alcohol has to offer! Make memories and share them with loved ones – one drink at a time!
