Selling and consumption of alcohol is illegal in some parts of India. I definitely have your attention now right?
Of Course, it’s true. Gujarat is the most well known dry state where prohibition on drinking alcohol is enforced. No drink for you in Gujarat that means. Sorabh Pant, one of India’s successful comedians talks about the consumption of alcohol in Gujarat.
He starts off the show by stating his immense love for alcohol and how it’s a matter of choice that should be exercised without any judgement. Oh, so you don’t like alcohol? Perfect. You like alcohol? Brilliant! Drink to glory. Life is hard!. Nevertheless realising the seriousness of such a topic he mentions the fact that certain types of alcoholism are definitely bad which ruins you and your entire family where he cites the example of his maid where the only profession of people in her house is to drink!
Truly a comedian in the truest sense, he highlights the negative aspect of alcohol consumption, a single woman earning bread for the entire family kicking patriarchy in the nuts and fighting poverty all with a single example. To add to it he hints at the aspect of capitalism by comparing them to the ‘Mallya’s without any money’.
Talking further about judgement, he talks about drinking laws in Bihar where if you drink your entire family gets caught! Further with such laws comes forward Gujarat where if you want to drink being a local you need a medical proof stating you need alcohol and for a tourist you just need a simple list of things starting from an NOC certificate, driving license, flight ticket to name a few. The repercussions of drinking alcohol are extreme in Gujarat, not only do you have to pay a hefty sum but your picture comes out In the paper the next day!
Alcohol is also one of the highly taxed commodities which he throws light upon in a light manner. So if you want to drink go ahead. If you don’t like it even then it’s perfect. Sadly though no cheers for the people in Gujarat.
