We, as a generation, never pay any attention to warnings; especially when the warnings are against our partying habits. We agree with these warnings and even go as far as considering them, but ultimately, a good party is all we really want. Unfortunately, a great party usually involves getting hammered and that is inevitably followed by a gruesome hangover. Ugh! The word itself sends shivers down our spines.
But what if you can actually avoid a hangover? Yes. There are some tried-and-tested, expert-recommended, fail-proof techniques, a.k.a. hacks, which actually prevent a hangover. Perhaps, you will finally find a way to not feel like you woke up in the fifth circle of Dante’s Inferno.
A major hangover outcome is inflammation and oxidative stress. These two are avoidable by taking simple measures BEFORE you go drinking. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs can prove quite useful in such situations. Alcohol pretty much depletes your body of nutrients. Therefore, taking a multivitamin with folic acid will help replenish the stores. A pill that includes thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, B6 and B12 among others would be a good option to ease your transition the morning after.
Also, there are several pre-party pills that most people vouch for with their lives, claiming that these pills work like magic. Just be sure that you take the medication at least half an hour before you begin drinking.
Get Your Beef On
Please don’t consider beer as food just because it has calories. Please.
Drinking on an empty stomach will easily be the worst mistake you will make that night. This activity will cause blood-alcohol levels to increase and may induce faster absorption of alcohol. Therefore, make sure you eat a good meal before your drink. Order cheesy garlic lasagne, or pesto ravioli or even a burger; do not order a salad. How your body will metabolize the alcohol largely depends on what you eat. Make sure you have eaten a meal with enough healthy carbs, fats and protein before you even order your drinks.
This will not only ensure a hangover-free morning, but also make sure you stay in control of your motor senses while intoxicated.
The Lighter The Better
When alcohol is produced, a by-product called congener is also formed in the same process. These are toxic chemicals which are formed in small quantities. Alcoholic drinks that have higher levels of congeners have been noted to cause harsher hangovers than the ones that have lower amounts. Whiskey, cognac, tequila have higher amounts of congeners in them; whereas vodka, gin and rum have lower amounts. Vodka, in fact, has close to zero congeners. So choose lighter spirits instead of going for a tall glass of bourbon.
Water is, hands down, the ultimate solution to avoid hangovers. Alcohol is diuretic, which means it makes you want to pee again and again. This causes dehydration which is what causes the headaches, fatigue and dry mouth. Thankfully, dehydration can be easily avoided as well as combated. Drink PLENTY of water! Make sure you drink a glass of water after every drink; there should be a 1:1 ratio between glasses of liquor to a glass of water.
Before you go to sleep, make sure you drink a BIG glass of cold water and right after you wake up. The cold water will provide you some ease from the heat alcohol creates in your body and relaxes all the tissues that are inflamed. Also, two glasses of iced water is an instant hangover cure. Two glasses and you are ready to conquer the world, regardless of how much alcohol you knocked back the night before.
Don’t Mix and Match
The most sought after ‘technique’ to get drunk quickly is mixing drinks. Most individuals mix their drinks because just one kind doesn’t get them drunk enough. This is the worst thing you can do. Do not let your crazy mind get convinced to drink multiple spirits. Don’t start doing tequila shots after drinking four pegs of rum. You will experience a horrible hangover the day after, accompanied by extreme self-hatred and regret. Stick to the drink you are drinking and try and drink in moderation. Space your drinks out well through the night and you will be nicely buzzed.
Kick That Butt
Most people tend to light a cig especially while they go out drinking. These smokers, or “social smokers”, often puff up at parties. Alcohol and cigarettes together cause a major spike in the body’s dopamine level; this generates a feeling of fuzziness after a few glasses. Smoking while drinking causes hangover by causing sleep-deprivation, headaches and even nausea. You are likely to have a worse hangover if you smoke while drinking than if you don’t. So stay away from those cancer sticks.
If at all, you are one of those extreme alcohol bingers, chances are that these hacks might not work for you. In that case, drink in moderation and have a joyous party and a hangover-free morning.
Don’t do too many shots, don’t mix your drinks and stay away from greasy food. May consciousness accompany you and may your mornings never encounter a hangover. Cheers!!!
