Most people who have traveled from one state to the other for job, college or any other purpose have a similar concern “Why is alcohol price different here?”.
You are lucky if your college is in Goa, Puducherry or any one of the union territories, you would have no complains.
Ever wondered why there is such a stark difference in prices of alcohol in different states?
The primary reason why there is a difference in price of alcohol in different states is because of government taxes. Alcohol taxes in India vary according to state laws. So there is no uniformity in alcohol taxes in India which results in the price difference.
Many of you might know this but why and how is something we will try to address in this article.
Government across the world taxes booze and control its sale, but there are only a few who does it as heavily as India’s.
Why is it different in India then?
What happens in India is that it is not only the central government that taxes boozes but also the local licensing fees and taxes play a huge role. It is not only these, there are a range of state controls on the alcohol trade that finally increases settles the prices. So the states which have a liberal government, the taxes are low hence the price of alcohol is relatively less, but for others it’s pretty high.
The final prices can be double, triple or even more from what it was at the distillery gate.
India has 29 states and 7 union territories in total. Each of them have adopted wildly different approaches to alcohol which are starkly different from one another.
Did you know there are different age band for alcohol in different states of India. Officially you need a licence to consume alcohol. You could go to jail for not having a license.
Broadly there are two types of alcohol that you find in the Indian market –
Indian Made Foreign Liquor also popularly known as IMFL. These include hard liquor. It is being made from importing raw materials or have got in concepts from foreign liquor brands.
Imported Foreign Liquor also popularly know as IFL. This is primarily produced outside India and then imported to India.

States in which alcohol consumption is illegal. These are known as ‘Dry States’. Alcohol consumption is banned in these states and consumption is strictly prohibited.

Maharashtra – Maharashtra is a state with a unique law which is not found in other states of India. The legal age for consumption of beer is 21 but other ‘hard liquor is 25. There is a district in Maharashtra called Wardha where the legal age for drinking is 30.
There is a concept in India as ‘dry days’. There are some specific days when the sale of alcohol is prohibited. These are National Holidays or certain festivals.
